LARGO WINCH Review

Posted by James Marsh at 4:27am. http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/largo-winch-review/

Who would have thought there was a Belgian comic book hero out there to rival Tintin? I will come clean on this one right away and admit that I had never heard of Largo Winch before watching this film. However, a quick trip to Wikipedia exposes him as having a legacy spanning several decades, including numerous chronicled adventures, in both novel and comic book form, as well as a previous film incarnation and even a TV series to his name.

Largo Winch is the secret, adopted son of business mogul Nerio Winch (Miki Manojlovic), who heads his empire out of the impressive W Group tower in Hong Kong. Largo’s existence is only discovered after Nerio is dragged from his boat and drowned in Victoria Harbour. It appears that Largo is sole heir to his father’s 65% share of the conglomerate and has been groomed his whole life as an insurance policy for exactly this eventuality. Largo is tracked down in a Brazilian jail by Nerio’s facial scar-sporting manservant, Freddy (Gilbert Melki) and must escape all number of attempts on his life if he is to make it to Hong Kong in time to prevent a hostile takeover, diffuse an internal power struggle and discover the truth behind his father’s untimely death.

For a fairly modest European production, it is impressive how slick and competent LARGO WINCH is. The director Jerome Salle proves remarkably adept at directing action, staging numerous scuffles and fistfights with aplomb as well as a variety of elaborate stunts and set pieces. He was no doubt helped by the fact that stand-up comic turned leading man Tomer Sisley performed all of his own stunts, enabling Salle to get in close with his camera and film in slow motion when, for example, Largo leaps off a cliff to avoid a helicopter-borne sniper.

As well as some well-photographed locations and pacey editing, LARGO WINCH also features some excellent CGI work, not least in the creation of The W Group’s headquarters on the Hong Kong waterfront. It blends in so seamlessly with the existing buildings that it had me scratching my head for a few minutes trying to identify which skyscraper they were using.

It is always exciting to see Hong Kong featured in Western movies and here about half of the film takes place in the city. Filmed mainly in and around Central and Mong Kok, Salle and his crew make great use of the city’s vibrancy and diversity, accurately capturing the spirit of Hong Kong from the expatriate perspective, without resorting to travelogue tactics, or it seems, getting much help from the local industry. Although a couple of HK character actors do crop up in minor roles I couldn’t see much in the way of Chinese financing or production assistance when scanning the credits.

LARGO WINCH is not perfect by any means. The story isn’t anything particularly original and the third act revelations are obvious almost from the get-go. The stunt casting of Kristen Scott Thomas, who here continues her recent spell in French Cinema, should serve as a fairly obvious clue of what is to come. There is some clunky dialogue along the way as well as some occasionally stiff acting, but Sisley is a handsome and charismatic hero and the overall high production values help make LARGO WINCH a pleasant surprise and an entertaining action/boardroom romp.

LARGO WINCH

article by Stephanie Chau

Directed by Jerome Salle
Cast: Tomer Sisley, Kristin Scott Thomas, Miki Manojlovic
Rating: 3/5

Based on a Belgian comic book series of the same name, Largo Winch is a slick adventure caper in the vain of the recent Bourne series. The titular hero (Tomer Sisley) is a wealthy heir to a big time corporation–only no one knew he existed until his father's untimely death. Winch's mysterious appearance obviously raises suspicion, and before long he's a targeted for death.

But that's okay because Winch can more than take care of himself. With a back-and-forth narrative glossing over his childhood, we learn that Winch is not the typical rich kid, and his dad's death probably wasn't accidental.
The main draw for this modest European vehicle is that half the film is shot in Hong Kong, and the scenes in Mongkok and Central are particularly exciting for locals. Director Salle is more than capable of shooting action and there are plenty of fistfights or chases to keep the otherwise standard storyline moving.

It's pretty expectable most of the way through, the usual corrupt board of leaders surrounding his father's companies will get their due and the handsome Winch will come out of every action setpiece with not a hair out of place. Sisley is charming and even funny at times. The other actors, however, aren't so hot (most notably the laughably bad overacting VP of the company, played by Benedict Wong).
The sequel is currently in production. Let's hope they find a better villain next time around.

Largo winch opens in cinemas: Hong Kong July 9th, Singapore and BK TBC.

Largo Winch

from: http://www.theplayground.co.uk/reviews/article.php?revID=204

As the Hollywood remake of Jerome Salle's French thriller in the form of The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie, we look at the original espionage as it is released next month

'Le nom est Winch, Largo Winch!' More Jason Bourne than Superman, Jerome Salle’s (Anthony Zimmer) expansive thriller showcases the blockbuster ambitions of the bande dessinée. For those of you unfamiliar with Franco-Belgian comics, I’m afraid your ignorance will be short lived. That is if Steven Spielberg has anything to do with it. And he does. The Jurassic Park director is a long time admirer of Europe’s 9th art form, and is currently developing a trilogy based on Herge’s The Adventures Of Tintin. The first instalment of that should be with us towards the end of 2011. And you thought we had run out of comic book heroes!

Largo Winch, adapted by Julien Rappeneau, is based on the first two editions of Philippe Franq and Jean Van Hamme’s sixteen volume comic series. It opens with the death of nefarious business mogul Nerio Winch (Miki Manojlovic), proprietor to the worlds 5th largest fortune, and head of W Group. Largo Winch (Tomer Sisley), Nerio’s estranged, adopted son, announces himself as the heir to his father’s fortune, but claiming that kind of fortune is never easy. The sharks in the boardroom smell blood, and money(!) and Largo soon learns that his father’s untimely death could very much run in the family.

Flashbacks to Largo’s troubled childhood nicely break up the ensuing action, and fans of the genre will not be disappointed with the films larger set pieces. In particular an elaborate chase involving speed boats, a helicopter and an impressive cliff dive. Salle’s direction is slick and assured in these scenes and Sisley is at his best kicking bad guy butt. The German born actor performs his own stunts in the film, and gives an assured performance as the determined protagonist.

Miki Manojlovic does well with an underwritten Nerio and the self confessed “bad guy” Mikhail Korsky (Karel Roden) steals the few short scenes he has. The rest of the supporting cast are less surprising in roles which rely heavily on tired genre stereotypes. Oscar nominated actress Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) is a familiar face as enterprising board member Ann Ferguson.

Largo Winch has its sights set on an international audience which makes its message, condemning of greed, all the more ironic. Despite the Belgian source material, international cast and Pan Européenne financing the film is predominantly English language, which is transparently a business choice. And it’s a film not short of artistic sacrifice. The dialogue is simplistic, which you may well expect from a comic adaptation, and many of the characters are not fleshed out enough for you to really care about. Mélanie Thierry suffers most of all as Léa, Winch’s femme fatale whose agency derives from a mole on her buttock.

It is by courting the broadest audience that Largo Winch ultimately misses its opportunity. A film that could have breathed new life, and a European perspective, into the comic book action film ends up feeling like more of the same. What is remarkable, however, is how much Jerome Salle is able squeeze out of a 24 million euro budget. The camera sweeps from beautiful location to beautiful location, and there is a sparing yet effective use of CGI. Most of the budget must have been spent on boats and cars, which contribute significantly to the production value. Although a polished production, Largo Winch never achieves the fantastical scope of its American piers Spiderman and The Dark Knight. It is, in fact, far more reminiscent of The Bourne Series or James Bond, albeit an inferior cousin.

Largo Winch is out on DVD, in the UK, from the 10th May.

DVD Review: LARGO WINCH: DEADLY REVENGE

From: http://www.obsessedwithfilm.com/dvd-reviews/largo-winch-deadly-revenge-dvd-review.php

Based on the Largo Winch Belgian comic book series by Philippe Francq and Jean Van Hamme, comes this stylish, kinetic, globe-hopping exercise in action and laid-back Gallic cool. Not to mention some Croation orphans, corporate espionage, cross, double-cross, traitors, friends and enemies. Or, just another day in a modern multinational.

Adopted out of a Yugoslav orphanage in 1981 by the wealthy industrialist Nerio Winch (Miki Manojlovic), the young Largo grows into boyhood under the watchful eye of one of Nerio’s trustworthy friends. But soon enough he’s taken away and introduced to the power and riches of his adopted father’s world. Naturally, rebellion intervenes and by the time we catch up with Largo again he’s a full grown man wandering the wilds of Brazil, and seemingly estranged from his father, and his privileged upbringing.

However, as becomes quickly apparent this is no Into the Wild journey of reflective self-discovery, as it takes the more violent and rambunctious route of a Franco-Belgian, Bruce Waynian search for against the odds punch-ups and characters who are generally bad for your health. But even fun of this level can’t last forever, and after the murder of his father Nerio, the Winch group’s acting head Ferguson (Kristin Scott-Thomas in effortless mix of British Steel and French laissez-faire) has to find Largo and his 65% of bearer shares (for those unfamiliar with the heady world of share transactions that means if you physically hold the shares – you own them).

For Largo’s part he doesn’t waste time in taking up the mantle, surviving bullets through the boardroom windows, and standing up to a shady, corporate Titan called Korsky (Karel Roden), who helpfully declares ‘I’m the story’s bad guy’. Then again, in a film like this, who can you really trust.

Adding to the character mix is the Winch Group security chief played by Steven Waddington, Nerio’s former right-hand man Freddy (Gilbert Melki), and the knowingly Bond-esque office matron, Miss Pennywinkle.

Inevitably things go explosively awry for Largo as he learns he’s been manipulated from the start, and left in the conventional state of being presumed dead. If only the bad guys would learn.

Largo Winch’s director, Jérôme Salle, has no doubts about what film he’s making and he pulls it off with such panache and verve that you forget you’re not watching the showdown between hero and ticking time bomb. I mean only the French could produce an action-adventure film based on a climactic shareholders meeting and make it work like a charm. Not since John McClane handed morgue passes to a bunch of German crooks has the pursuit of financial papers been so undemandingly exciting.

As the titular hero Tomer Sisley is all brooding, debonair, and action man charm, and while I might balk at saying he’s taken Largo Winch and made him his own (particularly as I have a limited frame of reference), any replacement would be hard-pressed to make any cracks in his identity. Here’s hoping that the multinational, multi-lingual, and border hopping filmic fun continues, and Sisley gets to really prove his worth.

Largo Winch? Who hell he?

Largo is an improbably named Belgian comic book hero, and is a cross between James Bond, Bruce Wayne and Bill Gates. Adopted from a Bosnian orphanage as a baby by rich-as-Croesus Nerio Winch (Miki Manojlovic), the founder and majority shareholder of the hulking W Group, little Largo is kept under wraps and left in the care of a friend of the family. Thirty years later, Nerio is offed whilst kickin’ back on his luxury yacht in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, leaving his secret heir to be revealed to the rest of the W Group’s board. The now greasily handsome Largo (Tomer Sisley), who’s been travelling the world in denial of the role his adoptive father had planned for him, steps forward to claim his 20 billion smackeroo inheritance.

Ah, but only if it were that simple.

As is the way of such matters, things don’t go quite as planned. It seems that there’s a plot involving a Russian gun runner-turned legit businessman Mikhail Korksy (Hellboy’s Karel Roden) to deny Largo his inheritance and launch a hostile takeover of W Group. Or is there? Is the dastardly Russkie being played for a mugski by someone from inside the W Group, possibly Kristen Scott Thomas, as she’s the only actor in the whole film you’ll recognise?

What follows is best described as aiming for the Bond/Bourne bullseye, but missing its target somewhat. The plot moves at a pace, but falls into the trap of going too fast, and leads to many ‘hold on, what happened there’ moments. One instant, Largo’s a penniless, bearded bum who’s been framed and on his way to an Amazonian jail after some brisk jig-a-jig with the seductive, mercenary Léa (Mélanie Thierry), the next he’s on his father’s yacht in Hong Kong. Then, he’s in a luxury speedboat on his way to a private island before being kidnapped in a Rolls Royce. The location changes are dizzying, and the flashbacks, though not as melon-twisting as Primer, will no doubt bore and confuse those with a short attention span.

The big problem I had with this film was that Largo is a hard character to root for. Not having read the comic books, this was my first exposure to the dude. Sisley has charisma and brings a believable physicality to the role, but for most of the time he comes across as a right old smuggo. With the Bond and Bourne films, there’s an emotional investment involved; Bond saves the world whilst offing a charismatic bad guy, and Bourne is an amnesia-stricken ex CIA black-ops assassin who just wants to be left in peace. Largo is just on the hunt for some shares that will guarantee his vast inheritance – one that he doesn’t want, mind – and save the oily hides of the one-dimensional bunch of characters who are W Group’s board of directors.

If you can get past this, it’s not a bad film. Being WhatDVD’s resident B-movie nimrod, I know a cheap film when I see one, so this was a pleasant surprise in that respect. Denis Rouden’s cinematography is of a high standard, the locations are impressive and there’s a fair bit of vehicle porn. The only area that they’ve seem to scrimp on is Kristen Scott Thomas’ wig, which makes her look like a Midwich Cuckoo.

If you try not to pay too much attention to the wafer thin plot, you’ll enjoy Largo Winch. However, I can’t help feeling that it could have been much more had the script been beefed up as much as the leading man.

Not to worry, Belgium – Spielberg’s take on the be-quiffed, plus-four sporting Tintin is just around the corner.

The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch

http://daily.greencine.com/archives/008039.html

At the opposite reach of the budget and sophistication scale, The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch posits a hero who seems to be fighting his way from freedom. German hunk Tomer Sisley is a free spirit with a thing for far-flung locales, mystical tattoos, kung-fu fighting, and bedding exotic strange women who push him into harm's way, but he's also the adoptive only son of self-made Serbian billionaire whose sudden death propels him into a swirl of international intrigue. Jérôme Salle's 2008 adaptation of the popular Belgian comic book plays out like a Jason Bourne escapade cross-wired with Wall Street and 1980s Duran Duran videos, shot through with explicating flashbacks and punctuated by a feverish chase scene about every 11.5 minutes. As long as Sisley's tracing a fingertip along the curve of a sensuous spine or diving off of a cliff, the movie's better than most pre-Daniel Craig 007 treatments—yet at the same time, it's utterly frivolous.

Largo Winch 2 (Tome 2) / The Burma Conspiracy: France/ Germany/ Belgium, Action/ Adventure/ Thriller – Quite excellent, and a logical choice to be shown in Thailand. Some of it is set in Chiang Mai, some in Bangkok, and the crucial center of the story takes place just over the border in Burma, among the Karen. The themes of “Crimes Against Humanity” and corporations too large for their own good are straight from the headlines of the day.

“Largo Winch” is a popular Belgian comic book series following the travails of a young and handsome orphan and his adoptive father Nerio, head of a business empire. After his father is murdered, Largo inherits the empire, but he is accused of crimes against humanity on the very day he announces his intention to sell the corporation and use the proceeds to create a humanitarian foundation.

Despite being listed as in English with Thai subtitles, or told that at the box office, the truth is that it is shown in its original languages (note the plural) and with English and Thai subtitles as needed. The original languages are English, French, Thai, Serbian, and some Karen. Maybe a few others. Quite an interesting international mixture, mirrored by the world-trotting locales, and the stars from many nations. Proves that not only Hollywood can come up with a first-class action film. It’s exciting and full-bodied, and the Berlin-born French-but-of-Russian-and-Yemenite-origin stand-up comedian Tomer Sisley is just perfect for the heroic central role of Largo. I’d like to see more of him. Mixed or average reviews. Not at Major.

More recently, the 2008 adaptation of Largo Winch – Jean Van Hamme and Philippe Francq's long-running serial about the heir to a business empire – disappointed in France (a disastrous $13m take). But it has continued to pop up in odd places, perhaps because it was a well-plotted and – with the credit crunch – timely adaptation: it did good business in Russia and the UAE, two more capitalistically inclined locations, and a sequel came out earlier this year.
